Advice For Parents

1. Advice for Parents

At UK Models, we understand how important your child’s safety and wellbeing are. We work closely with parents to ensure that entering the modeling world is a safe and positive experience—and only when your child is truly ready for it. With over 10 years of industry experience, we’re equipped to guide both you and your child through the potential challenges of the modeling world, right up until they sign with a reputable agency or begin attending castings independently.
If you’re contacted by one of our New Faces Consultants, please don’t hesitate to ask questions or share any concerns you may have—we’re here to help.

2. Avoiding Scams: What Parents Need to Know

UK Models fully supports the legislation introduced in October 2010, which states that no modeling agency should charge a joining fee prior to signing a model. Reputable agencies earn income by securing jobs for their models and taking a small commission from the work booked—not from upfront payments. You may encounter a minor one-time administration or marketing fee, but this should never be excessive.
UK Models never charges a registration fee to apply, and we offer honest, helpful industry advice completely free of charge.

3. How to Spot a Scam Agency

Here are some key warning signs and helpful tips to protect your child from unreliable or fraudulent companies:

  • Be cautious of ads in local papers, classified listings, and online platforms promoting urgent modeling opportunities.
  •  Avoid companies that don’t provide a clear physical address or contact number.
  •  Steer clear of agencies that only use PO Box addresses or are vague about their location.
  • If your child is under 18, an adult should always accompany them. Even over 18, it’s wise to bring someone along if you’re unfamiliar with the company or people involved.
  •  Never sign a contract without fully understanding it, and always verify the agency’s legitimacy before agreeing to anything.
  •  Don’t allow yourself or your child to be pressured into anything uncomfortable or into paying large upfront fees.
  •  A professional portfolio is an important investment tailored to your child’s modeling niche—but it should never be something you’re pressured into buying on the spot.
  • Use your instincts. A smart model—and parent—asks questions, does their research, and isn’t afraid to say no
4. Common Modeling Scams to Avoid
  • Street Scouting Scams
Some disreputable companies send scouts to public areas, such as outside popular shops, to approach potential models. They may compliment your child’s look, take a quick photo, and promise modeling work through their “agency.” In reality, they usually ask for large sums to join or create a portfolio, without ever delivering real job opportunities.
  • Online and Classified Ad Scams
Adverts on sites like Gumtree or in the back of newspapers may offer modeling opportunities requiring “no experience.” While they seem tempting, these often lead to expensive, low-quality photo sessions. You may be invited to a “casting” with many others, only to be pressured into buying unprofessional photos that won’t help your child’s career.
5. Final Safety Tips
  •  Always research a company online before meeting with them in person.
  •  Take your time to read through any contracts at home, away from sales pressure.
  • Trust your instincts—if something feels off, it probably is.
At UK Models, our top priority is helping aspiring models start their journey safely, ethically, and with the right support.
